LAURETTA RECORDS BLACK FEMALE OWNED & OPERATED INDIE RECORD LABEL LAUNCHES IN LOS ANGELES
Redefining the traditional label, Lauretta Records is offering a space for the undiscovered voices of the music world with a focus on TV & film placements and impactful content partnerships.
Los Angeles, CA - Lauretta Records, Black female-owned and operated indie record label launches in Los Angeles with a roster of six artists and more signings to be announced. Focused on creating a space for undiscovered voices in the music industry, Lauretta Records is led by Karina Frye, a 10-year music industry professional, Black Independent Music Accelerator Fellow (A2IM), and music entrepreneurship & marketing professor.
“Lauretta Records is my ode to the artist, “ Frye says. “I wanted to create a label that was reflective of what artists need; transparency, accountability, without exclusive commitment.”
The label is focused on bringing artists' work to life through television and film licensing. The current roster of artists spans across genres like the soulfulness of Revel Day with his latest single release “Get Up,” the dark synth-pop of Lavendel with her debut single releasing later this fall, and the R&B lyrical charm of Kesha Shantrell’s recent EP ‘Phase.’
On signing to Lauretta Records, Shantrell says, “My eyes have been open to just a whole other part of myself. I never thought I could write this kind of music and be who I am. And be able to dream and set up a future for myself. Lauretta has already set my future up by encouraging me and pushing me to continue doing this.”
With Costa Rican and Mississippi roots and years of background singing for artists like Leona Lewis, Andy Grammer, and Kanye West, Shantrell’s vocal range shows in songs like “Fire” and “Brand New” off of her ‘Phase’ EP.
Becca Luce, Director of Film/TV & Creative Publishing at Zync Music, one of the label's sync partners, says “Lauretta Records has a great ear for talent and that’s why we chose to partner with the incredible Kesha Shantrell. She has a voice that will stop you in your tracks. Her raw, authentic talent combined with lyrics that speak to this time of courage, community, and awakening truly inspire our work.”
Over the last few years, Frye and her team has worked with various sync partners to secure over 50 placements for artists in TV and film.
“I created Lauretta Records to be a home for artists who are not interested in that ‘traditional’ path, “ says Frye. “We want to support artists that want a sustainable life doing the thing they love the most: music. And in commitment to this one task we ask artists to approach their catalog in a different way. We ask that they focus on a body of work suited for tv and film placements while authentically representing their story and sound .”
Similar to labelmate Kesha Shantrell, after years of being a background vocalist and working with artists Andy Grammar, Pharrel, Vance Joy, Stevie Wonder and many others, Revel Day found his true love was creating his own art, which is where Lauretta Records has now offered a platform for him to pursue the solo artist path and unleash his soulful vocals and gospel melodies to the world.
“Having a team that sees me, sees my goals, and says yes we want to align with that and help you get there - that’s the dream,” says Day. “Being able to find it in a place like this that I trust, it just excites me what the future can be. I think my dreams are coming true and Lauretta is a big part of that.”
The roster spans across genres - soul, R&B, pop and alt rock, and includes Kesha Shantrell , Revel Day, J. Pollock, Calen Lucas, Lavendel and Jordan Frye. More signings are to be announced soon.

About Katrina Frye
Katrina Frye is the CEO and founder of Lauretta Records, a newly minted Black Independent Music Accelerator Fellow (A2IM), and by night an adjunct professor teaching Music Entrepreneurship & Music Marketing. Bringing together her ten years of music industry experience Katrina seeks to engage artists in a sustainable way. Since graduating from Claremont Graduate University with her Masters in Arts Management she has embarked on a new approach to “traditions” in the industry. By giving artists education and access to information, she believes empowered artists make our entire industry stronger.
